About Girl Geek and the dinners
So what is Girl Geek Dinner – what’s that about? Ever been in a club or at a party, where 80% men spot 20% women? A bit annoying for all parts, isn’t it? Well, the concept is simple: it’s an event where men are only allowed to come if a female counterpart invites them. Yep, exactly, that means well-balanced gender representation, for once.

Since this issue is taken care of, we can concentrate on the important things: socializing with interesting people, having thought-provoking chats and lively discussions (including a speech from a guest speaker), sipping some fancy drinks and having a good time with each other.

Girl Geek Dinner Deutschland (GGDD) is picking up the idea of the famous London Girl Geek Dinners started by Sarah Blow.

By definition, a Girl Geek is "someone who is female and has an interest in technology, particularly computing and new media. Not necessarily technically minded." As such it is not required that you 'nerd out' but actually there are quite a lot of women out there who like to have gadgets and play around with new media. It is just a bit different than what guys are usually doing.

A Girl Geek Dinner is an event, where these Girls come together and have fun, network and more. Rather than having a Girls only event (which is fine as well but not necessary to the liking of many women), this is an event on equal footing with guys because at least 50% of the attendees are female: guys are invited to come also to the event - but only if invited by a female guest.

You can visit girlgeekdinners.com for more information about GGD around the world.

Why Girl Geek Dinner Deutschland and where / when will they happen?
The idea to bridge worlds is also why it is called Girl Geek Dinner Deutschland, instead of Germany. It is not the idea to get rid of anything local, but to embrace it and integrate it. There is the expectation that hopefully soon there will be regular events all over Germany but rather than starting out with just one place and grow from there, let's start in different places and increase visibility as well as interest.

Berlin is first, due to the proximity of Nicole's town Lübeck Hamburg is probably second but from there on let's see where we can grow!

Why is this in English and do I need to speak English to participate?
Absolutely not. The reason why this entry as well as other parts of the website are in English is simple: The first GGDD will happen during the Web 2.0 Expo with hopefully several international attendees, and following GGD are suppose to encourage the international exchange. I also know that a lot of Germans would like to practise their English but never really had a reason for it - now here it is.

In order to be open for this, it is required that you are able to read English, as some of the information on this site will always be in English. There are going to be additional text in German as well, and newsletters or alike may be bilingual, but there is always going to be English!

So if you are an international visitor, you need not be afraid to be shut out of this site. It is yet to be seen how we will be able to handle the events for the speaker to be in English as well, but that is further down the road.

My English is not good enough!
This is a very common reaction, but don't be afraid! As long as you do have an interest to participate and learn, everybody will be happy to help you. We are going to be providing tips and information on how to improve your English skills in daily life. :)
